Offspring of Former South African Leader Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Allegations as Court Case Begins
The daughter of ex- South African Head of State Zuma has denied all charges to terror-linked accusations at the commencement of her court case in the coastal city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over statements she posted on social media in the past during violent demonstrations in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her dad.
A week of disorder in several parts of the country in July 2021, including plundering and fire-setting, resulted in at least three hundred dead and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).
She has been charged of inciting this unrest and is charged with allegations of provocation to commit terror acts and civil unrest.
Context of the Case
The demonstrations were focused in the provinces of the Gauteng province and KZN and came after the former president's detention for defying a legal directive to appear as a witness at an probe into allegations of corruption while he was in power.
She has repeatedly rejected the charges against her, with her lawyer in the past labelling the government's evidence as weak.
She has also frequently said the allegations against her were an effort to address political grievances with her parent after he founded his own political organization and ran against the ANC.
Backing and Legal Defense
This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the proceedings was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial targeting" against the ex-leader and his kin.
A small number of backers from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her parent and other group representatives were present at the proceedings inside.
The defendant's representatives has stated that the evidence presented by the state is insufficient and fails to provide substantial proof for a guilty verdict.
