Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

With the first season of the hit sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.

About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction

Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Will the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?

So if the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.

“We have some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Then again, why mess with the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
